Cancelled contract

I had a contract with Vodacom and my number 0714412840, initially this number was prepaid and i received a call from vodacom offering to upgrade my number to contract which mean i will get airtime of R48.00 per month and my account will be debited with R48.00 every month for 24 months and i agreed to the term via telephone, i never signed anything nor submitted my id copy. Last year 2012 i called vodacom requesting an early settlement letter to pay what ever that was outstanding and i was told it was R71.00 and some change of which i paid that money and sent the settlement quote back to vodacom and requested them to close the account, this was never done instead i keep receiving letters of demand from vodacom saying that i owe R236.24 of wich i dont know what is for. I called vodacom enquiring about this and asking why my account has not being cancelled and they told me that i did not send my id copy what i don't understand is when they called me to offer me the contract they did not ask me for my id or to complete any forms but when i want to cancel now i must complete forms and send id copies, they told me how it was legal and they protect by the law.
