Sim card upgrade customers

On 10 January 2013 i went to Vodacom for an upgrade as my contract expired. Since then i have complain many times because the reception is bad and my phone don't work most of the times. Last week i contacted vodacom again and the lady said i must do a upgrade on my sim card because im still using the old blue sim card, i went to Delmas brance and the lady said the sim card is to old to use in the new cellularphone technoligy. I asked but why did they not replace the card when i did the upgrade and she said because i did not tell them to replace the sim card and also because i kept my number for life as i use to be a MTN user but changed to Vodacome some years ago.
I am a pensioner and do not see why i must pay for a new sim card as my old sim card is still in perfect condition and not damaged, nowhere in my contract does it say that the client will be responsible to pay for a upgrade sim card if the client did not damaged the card. Vodacom was supposed to inform me as a client also i dont work for Vodacom how must i know to ASK for a new card why did they not say anything knowing im using a old card.
