Discovery is fast becoming the most hated Medical Aid in the industry and I can whole heartedly concur. They are very happy to take my enormous premium every month but not so happy to pay out when required. My Dr deemed it necessary for me to be on chronic medication for high cholesterol. All required documents were filled out and sent to Discovery who in their wisdom decline the application saying I do not meet the benefit criteria.! Combined Cholesterol level over 7!!??
On querying this with the Chronic dept I am advised I am not high enough risk and have not suffered an "event", nor are there "events in my family history". The pharmacist who assessed the application therefore is playing G-d and is over riding what my Dr has advised. Therefore when I have a heart attack they will pay for the hospital but not too interested in paying out of Chronic for the preventative medication???
Medical Aid should be just that - providing assistance for required medical bills to ensure a healthy member, not subsidising gym memberships and movie tickets!!! I am still waiting for an answer from the powers that be if they will now approve my Chronic benefit which I find totally unacceptable
