My husband and I joined Discovery health in August 2011 and my husband had a pre-existing chronic illness of diabetes and hypertension. We were told that he would need to be on the medical aid for a min of 12 months before we could claim for chronic illness benefit. When I submitted my application earlier this year (well over 12 months of being on Discovery medical aid) Discovery sent me an email to say my husband was denied chronic illness benefit because he had not had a specialist request him to be on hypertensive medication nor had there been sufficient blood glucose tests for his diabetes. We spoke to our GP and he was very angry that Discovery had said this as this meant that his blood glucose levels had to be very high for them to approve, which means him going off his medication to prove he is diabetic and thus putting his health and life at serious risk, and same goes with the hypertensive medication. This is seriously against the constitution nevermind endangering my husbands life to request such test results as these conditions are pre-existing. I demand that our application be re-evaluated immediately or we will very well seek alternative medical aid.
