Paying for a cancelled contract

I took a 24 month data contract with Mtn in November 2010 on number 071 891 5811. In October 2012, notified Mtn of my intention to have the contract cancelled at the end of the term. I was then informed that I can only cancel on the 22 November 2012 when the contract is ending (which I did). A lady at the call centre by name of Kgomotso confirmed that the contract is cancelled but I will still need to make one more payment in December 2012 and the number will be disconected from the network. She then gave me a reference number for the call - 94222969. When I checked my number in December and realized that it was indeed not active, I was happy thinking everything is as was promised.

To my surprise, I received a statement now 15 January 2013 and immediately called the customer number. Spoke to a very rude lady by name of Khethiwe who told me that "the contract is cancelled but your last payment is due on 21st January 2013" (and indeed payment went off my account). She didn't even want to answer the my questions. My major question is, how many last payments must one make? Mtn must stop debiting my account for an expired and cancelled contract and refund me my January payment back.
