Unable to access sim card due to puk number lost

Hi,

My mom went overseas for 2.5 months recently.
upon here return she put her MTN sim card in the phone to use it again and it asked for a PUK number
My mom does not have a puk number for this sim as she has had it for so long now.

She has been with no cell for a few days now and the MTN stores have told her that she must get a new sim and another number with it.

i have the cell number and this sim did not have a pin. she and i can verify information with you if need be but i dont see why she needs to get a new sim card if a similar situation occured a few years ago with another service provider. they provided the puk number with no hassle really...
Now my mom needs to go out her way, inform her number has changed to everyone which is more of a pain then anything else but another service provider did not have these procedures and handled this with convenience for customers. Is MTN different??? it seems so here...
