Cell C
Credit Card Information Security Breach

Hi,

When I went to Cell C Canal Walk to sign a contract, they requested my credit card details as part of the security check.

I was concerned about the fact that both the expiry date and the cvv number were requested in addition to the card number and owner name.

According to Visa and Master Card security standards, you are not allowed to write down or give anyone your cvv number. The only place it is supposed to be used is for online verification. It is treated as a secondary PIN for your card in a way.

I contacted Discovery's Card department, and they confirmed that this practice is not procedure at all, and when I inquired as to the required information to bill me on my credit card (eg, in the event that the bank account I supplied, bounced), they confirmed that you would ONLY need the 16 digit credit card number on the front of the card. Using direct transfer (by using the expiry date and cvv number) may not be used without the consent of the owner of the card.

There is also the concern that EVERYONE at cell c has access to that information, and Discovery Card actually recommended I flag the card as insecure and request a new one if Cell C left the information in the clea
