Top up contract balance carry ove

I have a Top Up 400s contract with Vodacom (Autopage as service provider). I have reached the expiry date of my contract and have a remaining balance of R800 on my account. I was told that, if I upgrade my contract today I would have until the 23rd of this month to use all remaining airtime. I find this ridiculous, given that I don't use that much airtime. I would like to move to a prepaid account (which the top up contract essentially is) and have my money carried over. Surely this must be possible. Losing the money would be wrong given that it is my money! Or at least offer me a credit towards the pay in on a new phone when I upgrade...
