Call centres have access to my bank account numbe

I called the sales department of vodacom 1950 on my cellphone as i wanted to get new contract with a tablet.
The lady proceeded to ask security questions as always... but when she asked for my banking account number i was thrown a back as ive never hadto supply my id number and my bank account number together. you get warned not to do so by your bank. I gave them all my other information as i am already a contract holder with vodacom... but refused to give a customercare consultant my account number... i spoke to a team leader and someone else above him and they refused to help me...
when i called yesterday to find out information on my vodacom account i was given all the information without giving my account number of my bank... my question is to vodacom? Why does customer services who im sure jobs are changed frequently have access to my bank account number... accounts i can understand but im sorry customer care...
when i asked the manager how can she ask for that, she said its for security and when i asked her for my security when i verbally give my id and account number to who ever is on the phone... shew said her staff would not to do that...
