Phone cannot read built in media and card

I own a BlackBerry Torch 9800. Recently i noticed that my phone said it cannot read built in memory due to fatal errors. Naturally i tried to format and repair the device from the handset - that failed. The next step was to connect it to my pc to format - that did not work as it said format unable to complete. My next step was to open the BB desktop manager to try upgrading the software. Upon trying to install new software, it said unable to complete. When I safely disconnected the device, it rebooted, but ran very slowly. I reverted to installing the previous software and that worked, and the phone ran fine. Yet, it still didn't show the built in memory - when I open storage settings, sometimes it says phone is in mass storage mode and sometimes it says built in media cannot be read. I decided to use a memory card and leave the phone with the problem since that allow me to store files on the card. Now yesterday after connecting the device to my pc to transfer files to my memory card, after disconnecting, it says that it cannot read the card either. Formatting did not even help. The phone is out of warranty and I have no idea what to do. Why has this happened? Any suggestions??
