Gym benefit to be cancelled - money-making scheme?

My wife, who had a baby - 14 months ago and who started her own hair salon shortly after, has been going to gym when she has time - not that frequently as she would have liked, but under the circumstances as much as she could. Monthly we have been receiving emails stating how many visits she is short of to keep her benefit. Seeing as she had not received an email yet this month, I phoned in and asked what the situation was. 10 visits is what she needs this month, where the previous months it was 4-5 on average!! Obviously there aren't 10 days left in the month, so she will lose the gym benefit. Why was the email not sent? Was it purposely done so that she would miss the deadline and have to sign up again and pay so much more, thereby increasing Discovery's profits? I was told an email was sent stating the visits was increased from 24 (which is exactly what she is on at the moment) to 36 (we never received it/missed it) and if we didn't receive the email we should have checked on the website - how should we have known? Can they just change the conditions like that - wasn't there a contract or something? Vitality was all that kept me at Discovery, but now I suppose that can change.
