I recently hired a car from Dollar Thrifty at King Shaka airport. I was warned about a R50 "admin fee" that would be charged when the car was returned, and the lady said that I would be charged for the refueling of the vehicle if it wasn't returned full.
I refueled the car at the Shell Ultra City Mvoti on the N2 south bound (I have a photo of the slip to prove this) because it was the closest garage to the airport, and then drove the remaining 26km to the airport at 100km/h to save fuel. The fuel gauge was just slightly off full when I arrived because the vehicle's tank was so small (35L). The lady who checked the car upon its return said that there would not be a fuel charge if the refueling was less than 3 litres.
I have subsequently been charged for 15.27 litres of fuel for a car that had been refueled only 30 minutes earlier. Thrifty are adamant that the charge is correct, and I have spoken with multiple people via email and at their call center.
There are other complaints on this site regarding phony fuel charges by Thrifty. I will be pursuing a charge back via my credit card provider.
