Closing an ABSA Account

How is it that in this day and age, where a person can open accounts, get loans and transact online, a simple process of closing an account is still languishing in the dark ages.
I changed from ABSA to FNB due to a host of reasons. In the months since, I have been fighting a losing battle to have my ABSA account closed. I was told I have to go to the branch where I opened my account - which is on the other side of the province to where I now work and live. Not being able to do it, I resigned myself to continuously transfer money to this dormant account to cover the bank fees. Out of the blue, I received a call from ABSA on 6 April, I lamented my problem to the agent, and he told me if I transfer the money outstanding on my account, he will see to it that my account is closed on the Monday (8 April). We decided I would pay my credit card instalment from my FNB account. Finally, with a solution in sight, I transferred the money requested and cancelled my internet and cell phone banking.
Today, I decided to check if my request was carried out by contacting ABSA. Lo and behold, it was not and I am back to square one.
Can I get a clear-cut response on how to close this account.
