Unfairly handed over!

So I took a smart device with FNB last year 2012
The terms of this was that my salary needs to be deposited into my fnb account, which it was.
I later lost my job and obviously had no salary to deposit into the account. My account was then closed due to the fact that it had been inactive for 3 consecutive months which was understandable.
In November when I finally got a job I went back to FNB to request that my account be opened so that I can continue paying off my smart acc but they kept sending me from pillar to post as they couldn't open my account.
Suddenly I get called by their attorneys saying I have been handed over! After I made countless attempts to pay them!
The attorneys kindly gave Duncan's details to contact. He tells me that regardless of my little issues I am handed over and need to make arrangement with the attorneys. From what I understand before handing over a client to debt collectors the client needs to have made no attempt to pay their account and uncooperative!

This is upsetting considering I made attempts to pay... Espercially becouse I told them I will pay the whole amount. Also because Duncan was just unhelpful and dismissive.
