Cannot close account

Got a settlement figure from Virgin Money. Paid full settlement figure by cheque. Cheque cashed (money disappeared from my account), but my credit card still not cancelled. Called the call centre thrice and explained that i need to close the credit card urgently, but was told that i must wait for cheque to clear. THE CHEQUE HAS BEEN CASHED/HONOURED.
Few months back, i also paid an outstanding amount by cheque but that money that i paid was made available within two days!
Pathetic and dishonest way to run a business.
