3 hour flight delay! No notification

I booked a 4pm flight on British Airways for 1 April 2013. There were 6 ppl booked on our reference number. On arriving at the airport at 3pm on the 1st we got to the counter to be told that the flight was delayed until 6.30pm! The lady mentioned that the delay was a carry over from the night before. I asked why we were not notified to which she replied that an email was sent out... I think that is ridiculous that an email is sent on a long weekend when there is little chance that the mail would be read on a holiday weekend. How difficult is it to send out an sms to notify passengers - that way you can plan to get to the airport at a resonable time with the delay in mind. Whilst delays are bound to happen - British Airways could do a better job advising customers of this accordingly. We were travelling with 2 kids aged 2 and 5 and spending 4 hours with them at the airport is extremely difficult. You get better notifications from lower cost carriers than from British Airways which is shocking! Very disappointing indeed.
