Airtime forfeited when downgrading

My wife has accumulated R8000 worth of MTN airtime and would now like to take a smaller contract Anytime 200 or 350 but MTN Klerksdorp informed her that she would be loosing all her airtime if she goes ahead with the "downgrade". By accumulating such a big amount of airtime is obvious that she doesn't need this type of contract but MTN wants to force her to continue with the contract to avoid loosing the airtime. This is airtime that she has paid for and MTN just wants to take away. What type of is MTN running? We are very unhappy and feel that MTN is their loyal clients. Surely the airtime we purchased belongs to us and can not be taken back by MTN. If I purchase a car and I don't use it, the manufacturer doesn't take the car back does he? If this is how MTN deals with their customers we don't want to be part of MTN any longer. Why can we not transfer the airtime to family members or friends so they can use it? We will seek legal advise if MTN can not resolve this.
