MTN Suspends service with no warning!

I was informed of the failed payment on 5 Apr, by FNB, and not MTN. I immediately made my payment.
I received a phone call this morning 9:42, asking me if I made a payment towards my failed debit payment.
I informed him that I made the payment (same amount as the usual debit), on 5 April, after which he advised that he will sms the relevant email address for me to supply the proof of payment.
I then received a sms from MTN, advising that my service has been suspended, and 1074.39 have to be remitted. I have since then tried to contact MTN to ask them why this has happened.
After sending an email, I tried locating a telephone number to speak to someone about this. The only number I could find was the 083 1 808 number, which I could not use, as my service was suspended, I thus had to wait until tonight to get access to another phone, after 15 minutes of holding, and depleting the funds from the phone I was using, I decided to resort to this email.
How can my service provider suspend my service, and not contact me before, or after this action to find out what the problem was, seeing that I have never missed a payment in 5 years that I have used their network?
