When phoning from Australia to MTN phone numbers, it is nearly impossible to get through. This happens using a cell phone, land line or Skype as well as using different service providers namely Telstra, Optus and Dodo. All other South African numbers work. I phoned the call centre from Australia, spent close to an hour on the phone being switched between different departments and the most definitive answer given was that the problem has to originate on my side (Australia). I contacted three different service providers that I use, they've tested my numbers to confirm that I am able to phone to South Africa. I knew that because I regularly phone land line and other phone numbers in South Africa. I enquired on an expat forum on a social networking site if any other South Africans are experiencing this problem, the response was that many people have this problem and that the only solution is to get your relatives to change service providers in South Africa. Any feedback would be appreciated.
