Mystery of vanishing airtime and data

I had alot of airtime and data on my cellphone. I did a random check of my balance 2 days ago and found that more than half the airtime was used and almost all my data had been used. I find this odd as even though I did use the internet for a short while I had data do so. Why is my airtime gone? I checked again yesterday morning and even more of my airtime had gone. I did not use the phone at all this time yet this occurred. I called MTN customer care and was told that they cannot see where the airtime was gone to. How exactly can my service provider not trace where the airtime went to? I honestly have no idea why I am with this service provider as there are no benefits to being their customer.
