Why do we have to pay the upgrade fee??

My contract is up for renewal and I have been told that I have to pay the upgrade fee to keep my contract active with MTN. I just feel that its unfair for the service provider to require a fee when one is keeping the business with them. in this time and era, I feel it is so easy to shift to a different service provider who won't require some fee which no one can explain what its even for. I have even asked at the store as to what the fee is really for and no one could give me an explanation beside to say its for head office??? If MTN doesn't need my business, then I will take it elsewhere!!!
