Paying but no statements

I have cancelled my vodacom contract and was told that I need to pay R7000! They said that they can only accept R1000 a month. I explained that I was unemployed and that I did not expect this nasty surprise. The attitude was sort of "nothing we can do about that - you need to pay this" I paid my first R1000 on the due date. The following month I paid R500.00 as this was all I could afford to pay. 3 months later and not a single statement from them reflecting these two payments. How can I continue to pay when there is no proof of where the money is going - what the balance is and how this was made up? R7000 is a lot of money to someone who is unemployed.
