Paying for months I shouldn't be paying fo

So... I was ready to leave for Egypt with my girlfriend as we both had job offers in El Gouna. It was in August of 2012 which is the same month my MTN contract comes to an end. I contact MTN to let them know I'm leaving and I will not be renewing my contract. I make my last payment of R700 and let them know I'd like to migrate my number to pay as you go, so that when we eventually get back I would still like to use my old number. They tell me it's no problem and mail me the migration forms which I complete and email back.

Now that we're back in South Africa, I contact MTN to activate my pay as you go number only to be told that I have an outstanding amount of R3 500 which is for the months of September 2012 to April 2013?

Why 'for the love of all things holy' am I paying for a service I never wanted nor used???

For the past 10 years of me being with MTN my contract has always come to and end in August... now suddenly I get told it comes to and end in April, 8 months after the actual date?

NOT HAPPY!!!
