Contract Upgrade

I am currently on the Anytime 200 package and would like to upgrade and remain on the same package (Anytime 200 TopUp). The phone I am interested in is the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini.

I currently have more than R600 airtime available and was told by the store that I would lose that when I upgrade. Is this so? Why? I am staying on the same contract. Yes, MTN has changed the contract (200mb data and 200 sms), but that cant be my problem.

Please advise how I can keep the airtime after upgrading my contract. I would not like to lose the airtime.
