Vodacom
False claims of water damaged phone

I took my iPhone into Vodacare (Nelson Mandela Square - Sandton). My device was constantly searching for a network and I was unable to place calls or connect to the internet.

I received a quote of R3, 190.86 from Vodacom to repair the device. The quote indicated that the defect had been caused by water damage and therefore the costs of repairing the device will be borne by myself and will not be covered by the warranty. I indicated to Vodacom that the defect was not indicative of water damage as the device was fully operational except for the fact that the phone was unable to obtain a connection to a network.

Optimistically I took the device to the iStore (Sandton) to get a second opinion. They indicted that the device was not running on the latest iOS software of 6.1.3 and had no carrier settings in place. Accordingly the software and carrier settings were updated and miraculously the device was fixed and fully functional again. The software upgrade cost a total of R0, 00 including VAT and took a meagre 10 minutes.

This has violated several of my rights in terms of the CPA and has duly been reported to the National Consumer Commission.
