Plesae cancel my membership

To make a long story short, Virgin Active needs to hire staff or IE. train their staff accordingly, in Februart this year 2013, i joined Virgin Active but now im trying to cancel it because i cant afford it and because i changed employers and dont have vitality anymore so premiums are way above what i can ever afford monthly. I phoned virgin active explaining that, and they told me i have a year contract, which was never explained to me when i joined, so i believed it was month to month basis, since they said to me if i dont go to gym my membership will be cancelled. So now when i wanted to cancell they are telling about these hefty amounts i cant afford premiums to start with, that i'll need to pay in order for them to cancel. Today they even said i must sign the freeze for 2 months form, but bottom line is icant afford it anymore; so do i now have to be blacklisted for this?
