I registered with Virgin Active Claremont earlier in the year for a 2 year contract. At the time both my wife and myself where working and affordability was not an issue. My circumstance has since changed and my wife is not employed any more. Thus I can not afford the monthly gym membership fees any more. I visited the branch and was advised that I if I wanted to cancel it would cost me over R3000. This is something that I do not understand and was not explained to me.

I do not understand why I should pay to cancel the service. I the case of a cellphone contract, I get that I would have to pay for the device since I can not return it. But in the case of GYM Membership, why should I pay for cancelling since I would not be using the GYM after I have cancelled and I would not be taking any of the equipment. What is the R3000 plus cancellation fee for??
