Refuse to exchange

I received a gift from my mum. A shirt for R699, purchase on 18/08/2013. I received the gift in September, the month of my birthday. The garment is in original condition, in the Zara bag with swing tag and price attached and I have the original receipt. The shirt does not fit, I go into the store in gateway and they refuse to change it, credit it or refund. Absolutely useless staff not customer centric at all. I want a credit for it and will purchase something else in place of the shirt that does not fit.
