Pick 'n Pay
Where have all the tellers gone?

I went shopping at the Pick 'n Pay at the Centurion Lifestyle Centre on Tuesday the 9th of July 2013 at 13:30. As I arrived at the tills, I was confronted by queues of 4 to 5 trolleys at all available counters. Only 5 counters (out of an estimated 40!) were open.

I approached two of the employees and asked if they can open additional tills. This led to a scramble by the two ladies, resulting in one additional teller (who had been sitting at a till all along), begrudgingly opening the till.By this time time the queues had grown. I was not willing to stand around for 10 minutes at a time when I should have been able to breeze through the store, so I asked to speak to the manager. The manager, Liz Beetge, was unavailable, so I was given her details.

This is the second time at a Pick 'n Pay that I am confronted with queues in the middle of the day, in shops which are quiet. It seems to me as if there is a serious issue with keeping tills adequately staffed. I went to Food Lovers Market, 400m down the road. It is a much smaller store, but had more than 10 cashiers working the tills. No queues, no hassle, but I lost out on Vitality points. Please sort out your staff Pick'n Pay!
