GHD WIL NOT BE REPAIRED!

My wife was given a GHD as a gift in April 2011. The proof of purchase was not given to her seeing that the GHD was a gift item. It was purchased from a salon in Durban. The person from whom she received the gift no longer has the proof of purchaseas it has been nearly 2 years and she was advised that it does come with a warranty card should there be any issues. A week ago, the GHD stopped working. The customer support centre was contacted and we were advised that without the proof f purchase, there was nothing that could be done. The GHD was paid for in cash as well so there are no bank statements or history of the transaction available. We are based in Johannesburg. the warranty will soon expire and we now have the problem of a GHD that does not work, and has been refused repairs as well. The GHD has been registered successfully on the GHD website to verify the authenticity. But still we have been told that we need the proof of purchase to show that it was purchased from a valid GHD supplier and that the GHD itself is authentic. Does the fact that it registered succesfully not prove that the GHD is not a fake. Can we please be assisted to have this item taken in for repairs!!!
