No feedback until I called

I have been banking with ABSA for about 10 years now. I have been on a savings account & I am no longer a student. Nobody at ABSA has bothered to call me & advise me to change my account to a cheque account. I went on the internet & applied for a potentiate cheque account. A week or so later someone called me back to tell me the account had been provisionally approved but I would receive a call back once everything had been finalised. I have since not heard anything. I called today & they told me the account had been declined & they apparently smsed me on the 17th. I never received an sms from absa & why did noone call me to suggest a different account? If someone smsed me then why does their system show that my application is pending? I did not want to move to another bank because ABSA is my home but after this, I think I need to find another bank.
