Card blocked due to Virgin money inefficiency

On 23 April 2013 I tried to pay a store with my Virgin Money card and it was declined. Knowing that I had excess funds in my card, I thought maybe the store had a problem, but found to my embarrassment that my card does not work in any store.
On calling the call centre I was told that in March 2012 (more than a year ago) when they delivered my new card to me, I did not hand over my proof of residence. I actually handed over everything they had requested (otherwise they would not have given me my card). So they summarily blocked my card with no notification, leaving me unable to get petrol or groceries, or even pay the post office delivery costs for my business.
I will be cancelling this card as soon as I have spent my positive balance.
