I'm a freelance sub-editor working for a major media company in SA. I've been in this position for the past four years. I receive an IRP5 every year, pay my taxes, and am a responsible consumer with an excellent debt profile. On Friday, Mar. 22, I visited my local Nedbank branch in order to find out if there was any possibility of attaining a home loan. I was essentially seeking some advice on the matter, fully aware of the fact that it will be a complicated process (seeing as I'm a freelance worker). Shirley (I only know her first name as she didn't bother meeting with me) told me, via a very apologetic intermediary, that there was absolutely no chance. She didn't even bother inquiring whether I was married (my husband will be the main applicant), had a fully paid-up property with a rental income potential of R6 500/month, or look at my investment profile or savings (also with Nedbank). I've been banking with Nedbank for more than 13 years. I'm disappointed that they didn't supply me with the information I then obtained from ooba (and the very helpful Karen Veldsman), or even just refer me to a bond originator.
