Account settled but account balance not cleared

I received a sms informing that I am still owing my credit card. I don't understand how this is possible as I received the sms below on the 18th November 2012.

Dear client your current balance on loanref # is R8629.59 Pay a discounted settlement of R5177.75 by 13/12/2012. Contact African Bank 0112074500.

On the 13th December, I contacted the above number confirming if this sms was legitimate as I was willing to settle the credit card and I was informed that it was. I made an internet payment of R5200 on the 13/12/12. However I now noticed that the credit card is still debiting from my account and I did not understand why. I went to AFB branch in Port Shepstone and I was informed that the credit card was not closed, and it's still accumulating interest. To my understanding when i paid the amount above, my aim was for the account to be closed, unaware that I had to personally close it. I believed that once the amount given is paid, the card will close automatically. I destroyed the credit card a long time ago, i have spoken to numerous people from AFB and they all promise to help but nothing.
