I was the victim of a card skimming syndicate-I believe the person turned away from my sight for 2 seconds. The first attempted transaction fails (card copied) and you are asked to try again-it is here where they watch over your shoulder for the PIN.
In any case, I feel that I should have been better protected against the EasyPay system by a more secure mechanism where only my cellular number may be registered against the service. This is the problem - the syndicate takes the card numbers and PINs that they amassed and registers them against cellular phones. They then buy airtime and make their elicit International calls. Further, the only two banks apparently that allow these transactions are Absa and Standard Bank and the only two Cellular companies are MTN and Vodacom. I feel that these banks should have had a mechanism in place where rapid successive transactions are detected and frozen until verified. Two debits came off my account within a second of one another. The first for R300 and the second for R200. Absa won't cover my loss due to a PIN being involved. I feel unsafe with Absa and want to move to FNB.
