I've been with ABSA my whole life. Because I am so scared of I don't own a credit card, make use of cellphone banking or any "easypay" system. At midnight on the 13th of May, 6 transactions went through my ABSA Savings Account. I only received 1 notification of R300. Reference number: "payD MTN EAZ"
I submitted case. Absa replied: "Absa cannot be held liable for any financial loss that you have incurred as the disputed transaction was effected with card number X and secret pin number"
I decided to do a little investigation of my own.
I had numerous discussions with MTN. Employees, call centre etc. They assisted me with my query and explained to me how the process works to load Prepaid on your phone using your debit card;
They confirmed that before you can load Prepaid airtime on your phone, you need to register on ONLINE BANKING or register for CELLPHONE BANKING.
I then decided to not take their word for it. I went to the easypay website and confirmed that what they said was true.(Refer to: [URL Removed]
I closed both my accounts and I am VERY disappointed in ABSA. Let this be a warning to all debit c users
