Absa
Insurance Policy loophole (for claims)

Good day all

I had my house broken in to last week and I was visited by Absa Idirect Loss Adjuster yesterday. I have a long letter but was not able to fill in all of the details here. But the main points are listed below.

Just to say this letter is also on the way to the insurance ombudsman so that Absa changes the policy on the way they sell insurance to the public and to clearly state all of the below when one signs:

1. What specified items mean, it should be mentioned immediately that cell phones, laptops etc are specified items.
2. They must send the inventory list when they send through the policy documents and expect it returned within say a week so the policy is clear to what is covered and how much cover is needed for one's household
3. Ask how many occupants are in that household and that each adult occupant's clothing is valued at a minimum of R 15 000.
4. And mention clearly that household cover takes into account your house burning down and every single item within the house being destroyed and that is how they evaluate household cover.

They need to be very clear about all of the above to prospective clients before we are asked to sign up.
