Cancelled insurance and Virgin won't issue refund

I was direct debited for my full premium in advance for the month of april. I cancelled my cover with Virgin Money insurance as of the 8th of april and had full cover from another party.
I should therefore be entitled to a full refund of the pro rata amount from 9th April - 30 April.

I have only received 50% of the amount that I would be entitled to as Virgin Money claim that I was "dual insured" for the balance of April.
According to a response I received from the refunds department this also excluded the pro rata amount on one of three vehicles that were on the policy, presumably as it was not covered on my new policy as I had disposed of that vehicle before the 8th of april and no longer required cover on it.

This is completely unacceptable and smacks of a last ditch attempt to over an ex customer (who previously was quite happy with VM and had recommended it to a number of people). I would appreciate a timeous response as my emails to the refunds department are now obviously ignored and in general I can't quite tell where the unethical practices end and the incompetence begins.
