On 8 December my eight-year-old daughter and I flew to East London from OR Tambo on SAA flight - SA 471. At the check-in counter, the boarding attendant requested my ID document and a copy of her birth certificate; to be sent via my phone, by my wife at home. When I enquired as to how he would identify her by her birth certificate, he responded that he would identify her by the photograph on the birth certificate. When I informed him that there was no photo on a birth certificate, he threatened to call the airport police and escorted me to his supervisor, who also expected a 'picture' of my child on the certificate. Eventually, neither official viewed the certificate produced, and issued the boarding passes without even a glance at the document. A letter referencing this incident was emailed to SATMarketing [Email Removed] on 20/12/2013. I asked for advise for future travel - specifically about what kind of ID they expect for a minor travelling with her parents. To date, there has been no response or acknowledgment of receipt of my mail.
