On the 24 March this year I have been on a flight that was overbooked. As compensation due their mismanaging their ticket sales I have received a complimentary return ticket (MCO Exchange coupon).
This seemed like a nice gesture at the time, but I have since realized that this ticket cannot be used as expected. The ticket clearly states that it cannot be used for a fare exceeding $750, which is easily more than enough for any return ticket in South Africa. This ticket excludes airport tax, making the above value even more sufficient for any return ticket within the country.
On phoning SAA, since there is no online method of using your free ticket (ridiculous considering it is 2013), I have been told this only apply to some flights. On two different occasions this year I have tried using the ticket, but was not able to use it on the flight I specified. Both of these occasions where more than a month in advance and there where flight tickets available on my selected dates not exceeding the $750 (R7000). Therefore I don't understand why this free ticket cannot be used. Why give the free ticket away if it is useless. I would like to hear your response SAA...
