Sim card suddenly stopped working

On the 12th January 2013 at about 1pm, I found out that my Cell C sim has stopped working. I cannot be sure of the time of the incident, but I was able to send an sms at 11:29. Afterwards, I ignored my phone as I was in a meeting, but after the meeting I attended to the phone, only to find that it had gone into offline/airplane mode.

At this point I thought it might have been my phone that had a problem, so I did what any person would do, I restarted my phone. Then I took the battery an sim out, put them back, then switched my phone back on, all to no avail. I have even checked my sim in my spare phone and it doesnt read there as well, I get an "insert sim" message. My other "MTN" sim works perfectly fine and a friend who uses Cell C says her's works fine as well, so I am forced to conclude that the problem is with my sim. There had been no warning sms that my service would be terminated, either yesterday or any other day in the past. This is the first time this has happened and it is a very weird occurence. Has anybody had anything similar?
