TELKOM PUT LAWYERS ONTO ME FOR A "FREE TRIAL"

Last year December I applied at Telkom Kenilworth Centre for their 3 Month ADSL "FREE TRIAL" specifying to the clerk that I was only interested using the service for FREE. The service was good and they sent a technician within the same week. My first bill came through via email for the amount of R1.219.64! I had no clue where this amount came from for a so called "FREE TRIAL", anyway I let it slide because I thought there must have been some sort of misunderstanding. Not long after the 3 months went by my ADSL line stopped working and my telephone line was unresponsive so I took it that Telkom had dissolved my account. Some time passed and I received yet another bill via email for just over R2.900! I am now being bombarded with SMS's from Telkom's Lawyers saying if I don't pay up they will take legal action against me! There is no way I'm going to pay this ridiculous amount of money for a service that was falsely advertised. Why does the law not protect the consumer against this sort of corporate bullying?.
