ROAMING RIP-OFF!!!

I received my Mtn bill yesterday (30 January 2014) for R17500, 00. I queried the bill with all the numbers given on their letterheads, to only be informed that my query would receive attention & was given a reference no.
Not happy with this brush-off I continued to try & establish the cause for such an excessive bill. We had travelled through Botswana & Namibia for two weeks in December. Being aware of exorbitant prices whilst travelling I disabled my data roaming & cellular data before entering said countries. I enabled these functions when I needed to download certain information & disabled it when finished. I am more than willing to pay for data I used. HOWEVER, I was shocked to see on my itemised bill that every half hour connections were made & charged for even though I was not using the phone.

The help desk stated that these new phones continue to download info & data even if you have disabled it on your phone!!! He further stated that the only remedy was to phone Mtn before leaving RSA to completely disable the Internet options on my phone.

HOW IN HEAVENS NAME ARE WE SUPPOSED TO KNOW THIS? Is this common practice?
