Why is it impossible to terminate MTN's contract?

Two years ago while doing my postgraduate studies, I was denied a contract even though I had a stable bursary in excess of R10k per month. I then asked my mother to take up a phone contract on my behalf. The contract term ended in November last year. MTN continued with the contract (I had thought their service would cease to exist) and continued to bill me despite turning down their offers for an upgrade.

2January 2014 I got an email from Nicolette Naido reminding me of the upgrade..2 days later I went to the MTN store to terminate the contract whereby I was given a reference number (7535033) - signed by my mother as the account holder. I tell this to Nicolette who responds by saying cancellation can only be done via calling 808... needless to say they claim only my mother can call and terminate the contract, really? What about the other available channel i.e. walking into an MTN store and signing the relevant papers?? Was that a futile exercise?

I just want my contract cancelled, is an impossible ask?

MTN's service is so appalling and judging from all the complaints laid here, that's business as usual! Something has to be done. We cannot be robbed daily by these companies.
