Convert contract to pay as you go

I phoned 808 to cancel my contract with MTN and convert the number to prepaid. The call centre agent told me that I could use my phone as per normal up until the point where I got an sms that I now had a prepaid sim, upon which time I would need to buy airtime. The moment I ended this call I started getting a message saying the service has been rica barred when I tried to make a phone call. I then stopped by the MTN store in the Grove shopping centre in Pretoria where I was told I needed to get the sim rica'ed again... a sim that was already rica'ed in the past! I returned with my proof of residence only to be told the system was now offline. I went to a Nashua Mobile store in the same centre and they tried to rica the sim. This was not successful, so I phoned 173 for the prepaid call centre. I was told that the sim was still registered as a contract sim, but when I then phoned 808 the automated answering service said that my number, 083 620 2401, is a prepaid number! I was also told by the agent at the prepaid call center that I may be offline for 24 hours... this means I don't have a phone for 24 hours and no one at MTN seems interested in helping... rediculous!!
