Forced to pay a huge amount due to negligence

My fiance got a new topup500 (I think thats what it's called) contract where he specifically asked for there to be a limit on the contract of R500. I was there with him and I also asked hem if they did put a limit on and according to them they did. Then he got a statement for over R2000. When he phoned and asked what happened they said the limit was never put on the system and if we don't pay they will take us to court. That is threatning and bullying at its best!!! WHY SHOULD WE PAY FOR THEIR MISTAKES???!!! When we said they can't do that, they told us that we don't have a leg to stand on and we have to pay. HOW THE DOES THAT WORK?! This is forcing people to pay for something that's not our fault. I wouldn't be surprised if they do this on purpose to people to get more money.
