WHAT HAPPENED TO CONSUMER RIGHTS

I bought an iphone charger for my husband today at the nicolway branch. As soon as i walked into the door a nice gentleman impressed me with good service and quickly helped me get an iphone charger which cost me R499 and my phone rang while i was still being helped and i had to quickly pay and get out of the shop. When i got to my car my husband told me i had bought the wrong charger and i asked one of my collegues to take it back and ask for a refund because i had to rush to the airport. I gave him the receipt and that was exactly 9 minutes after i had bought it. He called me and told me the indian guy who works there had refused and said the charger had been opened and they cannot take it back. Firstly i wasnt given the choice to even try a tester charger and if Altech does not do refunds why was i not told when i purchased it. R500 is a lot of money and now i am sitting with a charger i probably will never use simply because i turned into the wrong shop. I do believe it is within my rights to get my refund back especially because it was within less than 15 minutes from purchase. Please may i be told if i will be helped before i take the matter furthur.
