I live in Bunker's Hill in East London, which is one of the better suburbs, however the ADSL speeds are ridiculously slow! I recently changed to a 4 Mbps line but speeds synced at a maximum of 0.7 Mbps!! I used the "checkadsl" (Broadband availability and speed checker) on the Telkom site and it said my exchange supports 4 Mbps. However after complaints, the technician came to check and then told me that the area (Bunkers Hill) even struggles to support 1 Mbps!!! He said that they drop most connections to 384 kbps!! This is ridiculous considering that one of the better high schools in East London is about 200m from my house and there are plenty of guest houses in the area. I don't even think any ISP's advertise/sell anything less than 1 Mbps speeds!
Telkom needs to provide the infrastructure and proper speeds or pay for false advertising. I have seen other reports of similar nature in the area and the neighbours have mentioned these slow speeds. There needs to be more clarity as well from Telkom as to what is happening!
