Can the staff please adhere to the privacy rights of the patients.
When consulting, patients are sent to do an HIV test (as per procedure). On the door of the consulting or counsellor’s room, it is written “DO NOT DISTURB,” yet staff members continue to enter and exit the room. Thereafter, the patient is requested to sign a consent form stating that the results and conversation are strictly between the patient and the counsellor or nurse assisting them. How are patients expected to sign such a consent form when staff are walking in and out during the consultation?
A patient recently visited the clinic for a recurring illness. The nurse made an inappropriate comment, saying, “You must use protection; we can’t be doing the same thing over and over.” The nurse then allowed colleagues to enter the consulting room and view the patient’s file. This behaviour is unprofessional and discourages patients from returning for medical assistance.
There are nurses who are committed to assisting patients, and we acknowledge and appreciate their dedication. However, I must repeat: please ensure that staff respect and adhere to patient privacy at all times.
