Paying forever for something i no longer have

I took a contract with MTN 2006 or 2007. I later lost my job and went to the MTN store and at the time my balance was -1500. As I had insurance I was told that all was fine. I then got a job in 2009 and started looking for a phone again. I did an online application with MTN. I immediately started getting calls from MBD informing me that I owed MTN. they told me that I owed R5000 (the phone I had didn't even cost this much). I told the that I had insurance and was told everything was sorted. they wanted proof of insurance and I did not have this as I had moved from where I used to stay. I made arrangements to pay 250 a month, I have been paying and do not receive a statement last year I wanted to settle it, I was told to pay 4800 after having paid more than 3500. I don't know when I will stop paying this and do not understand why I was never notified that I still owed as nothing was said in two years until I started looking for a phone. I need help because I do not know when I will stop paying this and do not understand why I am paying it because I had insurance.
